What We Do in the Shadows: Season 4, Episode 9 “Freddie” (B+)
I appreciated the cameo of three human celebrities at the start of the episode whose attendance at the nightclub was cause for celebration, especially with the thrill of them ordering the Celebrity Special, which was all the more enticing because they asked for it. Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars met their ends rather quickly, while Jim Jarmusch was initially impressed and then deeply concerned when Sofia wasn’t calling him back. Colin negotiating a new contract with Laszlo as his representative was a real hit to the club, one that was not made up for by the circus performer whose act was remarkably short. Despite Laszlo’s initial optimism caused by the ice machine at the Binghamton motel, Colin’s time on the road was also brief thanks to his suddenly going through puberty which led to a disagreeable attitude and the loss of his pristine voice. Guillermo having his perfect boyfriend Freddie come visit started out much better than expected, but Nandor turning Marwa into a carbon copy of Freddie made things very weird and uncomfortable. Guillermo is definitely sad and may hold it against Nandor for a while, but Nandor also had to let go of his Freddie, who he humorously put a sign on to make sure he wasn’t confused, and who he said was much happier than Marwa ever was. Guillermo going to England to surprise Freddie saw him witness him being much more content with another person – himself – and it’s unlikely that Guillermo will easily find someone else so soon.
