Emmy Winner Predictions: Best Directing for a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie

Nominees are listed in alphabetical order by show. Beware of minor spoilers for listed episodes.

Danny Strong, Dopesick (The People vs. Purdue Pharma)
Michael Showalter, The Dropout (Green Juice)
Francesca Gregorini, The Dropout (Iron Sisters)
John Wells, Maid (Sky Blue)
Hiro Murai, Station Eleven (Wheel of Fire)
Mike White, The White Lotus

There’s only been one instance of a show with multiple episodes nominated winning, and that was “Fargo” back in 2014. Nearly every year since then, an entire series has won rather than an individual episode. Strong won for writing and producing “Game Change” in 2012 and was nominated for writing “Recount” in 2008, but this is his first directing bid. Though Wells has six Emmys, this is only his second time contending for directing, following a mention for “ER” in 2000. Murai is also nominated this year for helming “Atlanta.” From this list, “Maid” and “Station Eleven” are not nominated for the top prize.

What should win: I would choose “The White Lotus.”
What will win: This is between The White Lotus and “Dopesick,” barring a vote-split resulting in some other winner. I’ll give the edge to the former.
