What I’m Watching: Justified

Justified: Season 4, Episode 4 “The Bird Has Flown” (B+)

This show continues to be extremely interesting, but this season still has no clear path and no clear villain. That’s especially true now that Raylan has caught up to Randall, though it didn’t look so good for a while there, especially once Lindsey got her hands on the bean bag gun. There’s a marvelous simplicity to the relationship between Lindsey and Randall, which is that they’re just looking to get rich off of deceiving other people. The difference is that Randall lets his emotions get in the way, returning to the scene of a crime to beat up the man who seemed a bit too into Lindsey’s seductive story, while Lindsey is only in it for herself. That bean bag scene was fierce and terrific, yet another sterling example of how this show manages to enthrall at a moment’s notice. It was fun to see Rachel tag along with Raylan to help him on his personal business, giving them an opportunity to bond and to revel in a rare moment off to pursue matters other than official marshal business. With Billy gone and Cassie seemingly content with hoping for Boyd to be a victim of biblical judgment, Boyd had the chance in this episode to guide Ava through her first planned kill. Let’s be honest, Ellen May has survived much longer than a low-level player of her intellectual capacity should have on this show. Unfortunately, Colt’s drug dependency has just created a huge problem for Boyd’s operation, and maybe this is finally where Raylan steps back in to get involved in Boyd’s business.
