What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 2, Episode 15 “Cooler” (A-)

This may well be my favorite episode of this show so far. One of its strongest elements, almost since day one, has been the relationship between Nick and Jess, never explicitly confirmed as something that could turn into a romance but alluded to on many on occasion. Having them forced to go into a closet and kiss with their friends, including Sam, cheering them on, was the perfect opportunity for the awkwardness that ensued with Nick turning his head and then smiling while trying to go in for the big smooch. What was less expected, and so fantastic, was Nick telling Jess that it couldn’t happen like this, and then planting an extremely passionate kiss on her at the end of the episode. I don’t think anything should happen with it immediately, but what a development! I enjoyed Brooklyn Decker’s appearance as Holly, who was attracted to sad men, a contest Schmidt ultimately won thanks to a courteous contribution from Cece, and Brenda Song was terrific as Daisy, who tricked Winston into realizing that he actually was able to talk to women, and he performed well when he found out she was single, kissing her right away rather than trying to talk for too long. The presidents and vice-presidents game was superbly nutty and thoroughly entertaining, and my favorite part was Schmidt shouting “It’s Abu Nazir!” in a great “Homeland” reference in the middle of the game. The people in this apartment just have so much fun, and this episode was a complete blast.
