What I’m Watching: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Season 3, Episode 5 “It’s Comedy or Cabbage” (B+)

Everyone’s getting a chance to see Midge in action now, and who would have thought that Abe and Rose wouldn’t rather be anywhere else than at one of her shows? Getting away from Moishe and Shirley was definitely reason enough for them to flee and find Midge, and she seemed genuinely excited by the prospect of them coming to visit and staying in her room while she bunked up with her friendly neighbor. Naturally, Midge would use their being there as source material, though the far more memorable unscripted scene in which she appeared was the one starring Lenny, who brought her on camera for some fantastic banter. Their relationship is truly intriguing, since they were flirting insanely as she walked him back to his hotel room, but neither of them seems to want to take the next step. Susie really isn’t good at relaxing, and she’s stretching herself a bit thin working with two top-tier clients. We got to see more of Sophie in action and demonstrating just how demanding she can be as she didn’t want to imagine a door where it wasn’t actually, and I like that Sophie treats her pretty much the same way as she does with Midge, though she hasn’t worked up quite the same level of confidence to be truly blunt with her in every scenario. Joel’s own uncertain romance seems to be going along pretty well, though he’s going to be mixing business and pleasure in a problematic way that’s likely to come back to haunt him.
