Emmy Catch-Up: Emily in Paris

Every year, I watch the six submitted episodes of every series I don’t regularly watch that’s up for one of the Emmy series prizes. Last year, I started watching the entire season of each show to get a better idea of the quality I missed, and I’ve decided to continue that this year.

Emily in Paris: Season 1, Episode 5 “Faux Amis” (B+)

Emily does seem to get some pretty high-profile opportunities on a regular basis, but she’s also determined to make something of them, especially if people think that she’s not up to the task. I’d be happy having twenty thousand followers on Instagram (I just crossed five hundred myself), and Emily getting invited to the influencer event at Duree was no big deal. But she made sure to do something different that caught Olivia’s attention and even earned her a prime job offer as an official influencer for the company. Emily was smart to turn that down right away, and even though it got her in trouble with Sylvie, her big goodbye to the account turned into the next great thing, a helpful replacement for her Louvre overreach on which she was never going to be able to deliver. I enjoyed the like that Gabriel gave to Emily’s suggestive photo with Camille inviting people to join them in bed, though I think Camille’s going to be less enthusiastic when she realizes that Gabriel has been much warmer to his neighbor than she thinks. Emily does appear to genuinely like her, but the fact that they’re hiding this clearly passionate kiss from her, something that could be explained away as Emily not knowing he had a girlfriend – which of course is his fault for not telling her – and will surely spiral into a much bigger issue when it does come to light. The enthusiasm with which Luc and Julien demonstrated the Eiffel Tower sex position was decidedly juvenile, but the workplace is a bit freer and less controversial in Paris, apparently.
