Emmy Catch-Up: Emily in Paris (Season Finale)

Every year, I watch the six submitted episodes of every series I don’t regularly watch that’s up for one of the Emmy series prizes. Last year, I started watching the entire season of each show to get a better idea of the quality I missed, and I’ve decided to continue that this year.

Emily in Paris: Season 1, Episode 10 “Cancel Couture” (B+)

It’s funny to watch an episode like this full of major developments that came out so long ago, yet somehow I managed to avoid any spoilers. The best part is that season two isn’t that far off, and even though I hadn’t planned previously to watch it, I’m now fully on board for this mindless entertainment. I’m surprised it took Sylvie this long to fire Emily, though the humorous notion that it’s impossible to fire someone in France and Emily’s plucky nature meant that she was just able to stick around and somehow not lose her job. Julien and Luc said they would help her out, which I guess was sincere despite their lackluster efforts to help her adjust initially, and if, following her reinstatement at the end of the episode, this was Sylvie not being hard on Emily, I can’t imagine how little patience she’ll have for her antics next season. Emily did manage to help give Pierre the confidence he needed to try something very out of the box, and it worked in a big way. It didn’t feel right for Emily to be at Gabriel’s last night at the restaurant with another man, especially considering she knows that Mathieu is a playboy and will likely move on to someone else after their lavish weekend getaway. Antoine stepping in to fund his restaurant so that Gabriel can stay in Paris threw a real wrench in Emily’s plans, especially since Camille isn’t going anywhere either and now she and Gabriel have slept together. Having Mindy as a new roommate is likely to make her a more prominent character in season two, and Emily is feeling more than a bit crowded and overwhelmed at the moment. I don’t think this would be my choice for the Emmy for Best Comedy Series, but I appreciated the opportunity to enjoy this light series which makes for good fun.
