What We Do in the Shadows: Season 3, Episode 3 “Gail” (B)
I do enjoy the extra syllable inserted into Gail’s names by Nandor and Nadja, though that wasn’t nearly the most interesting thing about Nandor’s on-again, off-again girlfriend. As is always the case for a show like this that I haven’t watched continuously since the beginning, I had to check to see if Gail had ever appeared before and was a returning player, but it turns out she’s not. I don’t think I had seen Aida Turturro since her Emmy-nominated work on “The Sopranos,” and this was a fun part for her. Nandor’s love life hasn’t panned out too well in the past – see Meg in the previous episode – and now he was jumping back into something that hadn’t always been healthy. He was apparently aware of the fact that she had been turned into a werewolf, but I think her lack of enthusiasm for any sort of monogamous relationship that required effort was the bigger issue standing in the way of their happiness. Nadja having to continually insist that she didn’t have a problem with Gail was entertaining, though the repeated denials didn’t help. Laszlo’s eagerness to retrieve his confiscated car led to some prolonged hijinks with Colin, who of course got hit more than once and protested Laszlo’s lack of awareness, even if he did try to mess with him by pretending to be hurt when he caught on fire. That they were both hanging out with the other to try to be nice and do a favor was fun, and it’s not as if either of them ever really have particularly pure intentions.
