What I’m Watching: Orphan Black

Orphan Black: Season 5, Episode 3 “Beneath Her Heart” (B+)

This episode took a step back from our clones being on the run and all of the scientific specifics of what’s going on to focus on a major vice that wasn’t programmed into one of the clones. Starting with a flashback to Alison hosting a dinner party with Ainsley and her husband was strange, and we also got to see Cosima introducing herself to Alison for the first time when she was high on mushrooms. Both those moments served to be useful in identifying that Alison likes to be in control, and that she’s enormously susceptible to the influence of drugs and alcohol. More powerful than her relapse, however, was seeing her rise to Donnie’s defense when he fell during his performance. Nothing was sweeter than ending the episode with Alison and Donnie singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” together, showing a true bond that’s withstood a murder or two and a whole lot of Helena. Art’s new partner planting evidence in their shed was inconsequential since Alison was bold enough to go right in to meet with Rachel and confess exactly what had happened with Dr. Leekie, making this just the latest time that a compromise with the enemy has resulted in an immediate sense of security since working with Lida and any other malignant forces means a certain kind of ominous protection. It’s always a shock to see or hear Beth referenced again since she was really the one running the show, steering things a bit more smoothly than Sarah does as the one currently sort of in charge.
