What I’m Watching: Episodes (Penultimate Episode)

Episodes: Season 5, Episode 6 “Episode 506” (B+)

It’s hard to believe that this show has just one episode left both because I love it but also because I still contend that this is one of the most underappreciated and funny shows on the air. One of the strengths of this show is that this episode does manage to move a few things forward while not seeming like it’s nearing the end. Their pitch went pretty well, but then things got complicated when Eileen and Roger were communicating with their clients and Beverly and Sean became aware that Matt’s production company, Shooting LeBlancs, a surprisingly clever moniker from the rather simple-minded actor, was behind the show and that Matt was set on a “created by” credit. After Sean trolled Matt by calling the QVT show and pointing out the odor of the vest, some helpful time-jumping fast-forwarded things to a pleasant, drink-filled dinner which made it seem like everything was alright. Yet of course the episode would end with the bombshell that Matt was deciding to pass after all this. Beverly and Sean getting a happy ending would be too simple, though we have seen that almost happen in the past. I enjoyed the brief appearance by Myra during the meeting, and Beverly stopping to talk to Helen, who threw her off her guard by telling her that her haircut was sexy. Visiting Carol with “Jew-ba-ka” and other “Semitic treats” was great, and sending Carol off to Michigan is a fitting fate – I can’t imagine Kathleen Rose Perkins will ever have a role quite as superb as this one again though I certainly hopes she does.
