What I’m Watching: Ray Donovan

Ray Donovan: Season 5, Episode 9 “Mister Lucky” (B)

After an episode devoted entirely to Abby’s death, we’re back to how things look months later, when everyone is in pretty bad shape with no real signs of things looking up given the events of the hour. The most jarring thing was seeing Ray identified by name on TV when he got photographed with Natalie, a rare public acknowledgment of his existence and the fact that he’s actually very well-known in the celebrity circuit even though he really keeps to himself in terms of his personal life. After tracking down George and interrogating Vicky, he returned home to a different kind of devastating home situation, with Rob lying dead outside and Natalie dead on the bed. It’s going to be hard to cover that up when she died at his apartment and the whole world knew they were together, and Bridget’s horrified reaction to seeing him on TV is hardy going to be the worst of it. She didn’t even know what to say when she found Mickey and Daryll partying it up in her home, and that whole situation is set to implode soon since Donald Faison’s Antoine wasn’t nearly as effective as he had hoped at dealing with the Mickey problem, which very much still exists. Springing one of his assailants from prison didn’t work out for Bunchy since he got shot and the other guy died. There are just three episodes left this season, which I don’t feel has been full of direction but will hopefully end on an emphatic note nonetheless.
