Emmy Catch-Up: Emily in Paris

Every year, I watch the six submitted episodes of every series I don’t regularly watch that’s up for one of the Emmy series prizes. Last year, I started watching the entire season of each show to get a better idea of the quality I missed, and I’ve decided to continue that this year.

Emily in Paris: Season 1, Episode 9 “An American Auction in Paris” (B)

Somehow, on this show, it’s not a stretch to believe that Emily would be selected to wear the Pierre Cadault dress that she managed to convince him to auction off for her new pal from the American Friends of the Louvre. That did of course come with the unfortunate humiliation of having paint thrown at her by the new owners of the piece as part of a publicity stunt, resulting in her ending up on the front page as the laughing stock of Paris. Surely that’s a bit dramatic, but it’s just the kind of thing that would happen to Emily, who is also in over her head with Mathieu, who may have a reputation as a playboy but manages to be quite charming in spite of it. I did enjoy Emily’s visit to Pierre, who was cracking a tray of crème brulée dishes just to hear the sound, and, though he seems to like her, he was not open to the idea of putting his logo on streetwear. It was also fun to see Sylvie meet both Judith and Camille, both of whom weren’t afraid of her but probably should have been. It was also incredibly awkward and certainly office-inappropriate for Luc, Julien, and Emily to be discussing and opening the gift of nipple rings that Antoine sent to Sylvie as some sort of apology, and it is definitely possible that Emily was right and they were just messing with her. Luc’s sexual commentary on the art was an unexpected subplot, one that somehow, like so much on this show, just felt right even if it’s a bit hard to believe.
