30 Rock: Season 5, Episode 16 “TGS Hates Women” (B-)
In certain respects, this episode is better than last week’s installment, but in others, it’s not. It’s especially disappointing because this show is occasionally capable of producing quality, scathing humor that provides some of the best parody seen today on television, as evidenced two weeks ago with “Double-Edged Sword.” Yet sometimes the show appears to be both lazy and over-the-top at the same time. I’m a bit befuddled that Tracy, despite being the show’s most unhinged and out-of-control character, appears to have been unceremoniously written out of the show, leaving some of the crazier stuff to the more normal characters. I was not a fan of Abby’s entire storyline, and the surprise revelation that her violent husband was actually after her didn’t do it for me. I didn’t find Abby to be particularly funny, and the only amusing part was seeing Frank and Lutz get dressed up to try to impress her. Having not seen either “Kick-Ass” or “Let Me In,” I was rather impressed with the work I saw from young actress Chloe Moretz here as Jack’s would-be, and apparently truthful, nemesis. It’s always hilarious to see Jack get wrapped up in something completely ridiculous, and his off-the-wall storyline worked much better than anything else in this episode. It makes sense that Jack would engage in trickery and extensive mental combat with a child, and it’s fantastic that she’s able to resist his influences and even able to one-up him by pulling off the exact same trick on him.

I actually thought this was the best episode this season, mostly because I found everything that happened in it hilarious. I loved the Abby storyline, and I love it when Liz puts her foot in her mouth, because she's always funny when she tries to be a good person only to find out she messed up. And, even though Abby's baby voice was annoying, I loved how they handled that story.
Also, I think Tracy was written out of the episode this week because Tracy Morgan had to have surgery. I'm not entirely sure, but I heard something about that. Anyway, he should be back.
By the way, you have to see Kick-Ass and Let Me In, if only to see Chloe Moretz's performances. She is very talented!!! You might also remember her from (500) Days of Summer (she played Joseph Gordon-Levitt's little sister in that) and here, she's probably the best I've ever seen her. I love that Jack has a new nemesis and I definitely want to see her back.
By the way, this is Richter Scale.
I assumed it was you! I didn't realize that was Moretz in "500 Days of Summer," but I can tell she's talented. I thought that might be the case with Morgan, though I wasn't sure. I'm hot and cold with this show, and I usually feel that the episodes I enjoy a lot, like "Gavin Volure," are not the ones most people enjoy. Jack having a new nemesis is a good thing, though I'm not sure she'll be back since this show often has guest stars for one-shot spots and that's it.
