What I’m Watching: Sons of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy: Season 6, Episode 4 “Wolfsangel” (B+)

This show rarely ceases to be agonizingly powerful and devastating to watch. Unser getting attacked by skinheads at the start of the episode was far from its most disturbing part, and, as has been the case with last season especially, this show is not averse to killing off major characters without a moment’s hesitation. The unfortunate benefactor of that tendency in this hour was poor Phil, who has always been loyal and kind when called upon, and he got himself shot in the head and cruelly dismembered as part of the Irish move to punish SAMCRO for wanting to get out of the gun business. Two other big deaths were fitting for the way the characters lived their lives and killed others – Otto and Toric. This show never lets a character’s need to stay alive get in the way of some good storytelling, as is the case with Toric, who was right in the middle of framing Nero for killing the escort, something Roosevelt was quickly putting together. Clay giving Otto the knife so that he could kill Toric, who didn’t see it coming, was a big deal, and now Clay is in great shape, free of pressure to turn against the club and potentially even on his way to getting released from prison since he didn’t even commit the crime for which he was arrested. It’s good to see that Tig’s debt has been considered paid, and that should help Jax and him become closer again. With everything going on, Jax can use all the friends he can get.
