What I’m Watching: Better Call Saul (Season Finale)

Better Call Saul: Season 4, Episode 10 “Winner” (B+)

This isn’t what I had expected from this finale given the events of the previous episode. That said, this was a superb way to end things, skipping ahead a bit in time to see Jimmy and Kim playing out their latest scheme, one that may have been complex but didn’t seem quite as frivolous or complicated in nature despite the fact that it was definitely grander and more overarching in nature. Jimmy will never stop being the person who sees those who haven’t gotten a second chance and tries to egg them on even if they’re not remotely interested in his words of encouragement. On the one-year anniversary of Chuck’s death, and with flashbacks showing an actual positive moment between the two of them when Chuck vouched for Jimmy when he first became a lawyer, Jimmy used his legacy in the way he should have to win over the committee. Describing that “one asshole” who was genuinely crying showed Kim that Jimmy really wasn’t on the same page as her, never capable of sincerity and ready to leave her behind with his flashy transition to doing business as Saul Goodman. Werner sealing his own fate felt remarkably similar to that of Hank at the end of “Breaking Bad,” and Mike was kind to let him warn his wife off so that she too wouldn’t lose her life as a result of his mistake. Mike managed to cleverly get Lalo off his tail, but Lalo got the upper hand when he tricked Werner into revealing much more than Gus believes he said. I like that this is how Gale got brought in to run the lab, and I’m very eager to see how things start to come together in the next season that gets us closer to a legitimate criminal enterprise. This has been a superb season, and while Odenkirk should be a shoo-in for another Emmy nomination, I can only hope that Rhea Seehorn gets finally gets recognized too.

Season grade: A-
Season MVP: Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy and Rhea Seehorn as Kim
