Insecure: Season 3, Episode 8 “Ghost-Like” (B+)
It’s crazy that this season is already over, but fortunately this well-regarded show is already slated to come back for a fourth season, and, given HBO’s enthusiasm for most of its programming, will probably continue beyond that. This felt like an appropriate way to say goodbye to these characters for the moment, with Issa’s thirtieth birthday taking center stage. It was strange for me to watch this episode and realize that they’re all supposed to be thirty, the same age I am, though upon further research, my suspicion that they’re all actually a few years older was confirmed. While what happens on this show is always interesting, the way the characters interact and see one another is also pretty terrific, which made Issa lashing out at Molly when she found out that she scared away the man I’ll always refer to as Nanceford one of the most worthwhile moments of the episode. Molly’s excitement over getting assigned as co-lead with Taurean quickly dissipated when her uncooperative behavior led to what Issa rightly described, a road to the top with no friends along the way. Issa’s block party may have fallen apart as cleverly conveyed in the montage of disappointing partnership asks at the start of the episode, but she’s in a really good place with Lawrence, who’s telling other people the same thing, and she stood her ground when Nanceford tried to explain why he ghosted her. It’s hard to know what will come next, and I think that’s because Issa has no idea too. This has been a great year and I can’t wait for season four!
