Orphan Black: Season 5, Episode 2 “Clutch of Greed” (B+)
This show has always had an air of mystery to it, without a true sense of just how big things went and who was secretly a monitor. Now, it’s all out in the open, and instead we’re prone to very obvious deception as no one seems concerned with keeping the existence of the clones on the down low anymore. As if Tatiana Maslany wasn’t working hard enough already, here she got to play one clone playing another clone, first with Sarah pretending to be Rachel so that she could pick up Kyra and then with MK donning Sarah’s Rachel guise to throw Ferdinand off. There’s something disconcerting about Sarah being in captivity because, of everyone, she manages to seem the most panicked when she’s concerned and not in control of things, as that mouth implant a while back indicated. Much more disturbing, of course, was the way in which one of the clones we knew the least, MK, bit the dust, with Ferdinand cruelly stomping her to death. The fact that Kyra knew right away was chilling, and it will be hard to come back from that, even though Rachel was displeased enough at Ferdinand’s disobedience to dismiss him, which will probably mean that he’ll stay in the picture somehow causing some sort of trouble. Another long-term mystery, the man who seemingly couldn’t die, also seems to be presenting itself very literally, and having Cosima as the one to experience it, the most scientific mind among them all, is effective. I enjoyed seeing Helena’s reaction to the term “neonatal,” resulting a whole lot of chaos at the hospital.
