What I’m Watching: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Season 3, Episode 4 “Josh’s Ex-Girlfriend Is Crazy.” (B+)

Rebecca is going off the deep end, and of course on this show that means a focused kind of crazy inspired by the villain in a movie who just happens to be portrayed by Danish-American actress Erika Christensen. The “Swimchan” trailer was pretty terrific, complete with Rebecca’s name in the credits aside from a few choice selections of scary movie crew members. Rebecca did manage to make Josh very scared, and after she told him that she needed him, he definitively said that he wanted her to leave him alone. Sleeping with Greg’s dad was a low point indeed, and going home may well be the best thing to get her out of this mode for a bit. Though what she said to her friends was cruel, it appears to have been truthful in all cases. Paula and Valencia had a good moment, Heather and Hector are bonding, and Darryl and White Josh are having some important conversations. It seems impossible to know how things will be able to get back to normal, but what’s great about this episode is that Rebecca’s fall from grace isn’t the most prominent part. We have supporting characters getting a showcase, including George and his date, who Nathaniel cared about enough to have them stay over when he interrupted their date. “Life Doesn’t Make Narrative Sense” featuring a surprise guest appearance by Josh Groban was a great musical highlight that served as yet another clever song that also helps to explain some of the plot.
