What I'm Watching: Studio 60

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: Season 1, Episode 18 "Breaking News" (C+)

This is the definition of an uneven episode, despite the return of the three main stars. Matt's battle with drug addiction seems out-of-place and sort of random, and his interaction with Danny is not nearly as interesting or engaging as it used to be in the early episodes of the show. Kari Matchett, guest-starring as lawyer Mary Tate, was great in her previous episode "4 a.m. Miracle" but immediately becomes terribly grating and annoying by overdoing her flirtation with Matt and then mysteriously dropping it towards the end of the episode. I am continually liking Steven Weber's performance as NBS chairman Jack Rudolph. The whole deal with Tom and his brother feels unrelated, and the end of this episode was much better played out in "Sleeper Cell: American Terror". Four episodes to go; let's hope "Studio 60" can find its footing again so that these burnoff episodes do not feel so much like burnoff episodes.
