What I'm Watching: The Tudors (Series Premiere)

The Tudors: Season 1, Episode 1 "Episode 1" (B-)

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers stars as Henry VIII in Showtime's new series. The production values are definitely expansive and commendale, but as with HBO's shows like "Deadwood" and "Rome," it is very difficult to get into due to the complexity of its plot. Quite a bit occurs in the episode, and it does feel like a very long hour. Rhys-Meyers does an able job in what is sort of a reimagining like that of Marie Antoinette by Sofia Coppola earlier last year. Sam Neill is probably the right person to play the probable future Pope and current right-hand man to Henry. Overall, the show is appealing but not exciting enough to watch week after week.
