What I’m Watching: The Bridge

The Bridge: Season 2, Episode 5 “Eye of the Deep” (B+)

Watching the “previously on” segment is always telling because it indicates that certain plotlines that haven’t been referenced in a long time are sure to bubble back up to the surface in a way that might be entirely surprising if not for the heads-up from that introductory segment. In this case, that meant that we barely saw any of Eleanor and instead returned to two characters largely unseen since season one: David Tate and Eva. Tate clearly is not having a good time in prison, and though it was brutal to watch, Marco’s destruction of his eye was probably a more fitting and enduring punishment than a swift or even long and painful death would have been. Marco’s absence got noticed by just about everyone, and he really should have been present when Eva identified Robles as one of her assailants. Sonya, who herself was distracted by attending the funeral, if you can call it that, of her current boyfriend’s brother, managed to step in to save the day and Juarez’s most determined lawyer from certain doom. Learning that Agent Mackenzie is Daniel’s secret source is a major discovery, though it’s certainly understandable given that the DEA is getting just as little cooperation from other agencies as he’s giving to Hank and Marco. It was great to see Ian Hart, a familiar face from “Dirt,” “Luck,” and “Rogue,” in a less seedy role than usual as the CIA agent who rather matter-of-factly stepped in to ruin Mackenzie’s day on behalf of his agency.
