What I’m Watching: Married

Married: Season 1, Episode 4 “Uncool” (B+)

This episode was the least literal installment so far, but as long as it’s funny, I don’t think it’s a problem. I like how the starting segment of each episode is an amusing tidbit about roles in marriage, which in this episode culminated in Russ admitting that the dentist may have called first to tell them that they owed money. It was great to see John Hodgman’s Bernie again, who provides some decent background entertainment. All of the ridiculous with Dougie and his midterms and the whole college party scene was made worthwhile by Russ’ disappointment and anger over how girls were being talked about and treated and all of his commentary about it. This episode wasn’t meant to be taken at face value, and I think it was still enjoyable. Lina needing to go back to work presented the opportunity for a semi-successful shopping trip with Jess, and I’m glad that we got to see them hanging out again. Smoking in the car to calm her nerves may not have been the best choice, but it was still more advisable than sending A.J. in to smell her old boss’ breath. Those shenanigans ended predictably poorly, with the three of them ducking so that they wouldn’t be in the car being the highlight. I liked the episode’s closing scene where we got a brief reminder of what it’s like to be happily married but completely sarcastic, as Russ endearingly pointed out to Lina that it’s creepy when she watches the kids sleep.
