What I’m Watching: Hell on Wheels

Hell on Wheels: Season 4, Episode 2 “Escape from the Garden” (B+)

Cullen deserves some serious credit for what he did to get away from a life of Mormon captivity. He rarely says much, and while he’s much more conventionally intellectual than he lets on, it’s not always as eloquent as perhaps it should be. But in this case, he cozied up, quite literally, to the Swede to make him believe that he was embracing the religion or at least just the illusion of it. And then he played right into the Swede’s own self-obsessed nature by preaching about his divine importance, in the process getting the Swede to admit publicly to having killed the man he now claimed to be. The fact that he just rode out of there with his family while the town prepared to set itself on the Swede was incredible. Naomi is turning out to be a very different character than I had expected, which is great. Psalms’ excited reaction to Cullen’s return was nice, though having to tell Cullen that Elam is gone dampened the mood. Cullen may not like what he finds in Cheyenne given Provisional Governor Campbell’s forceful arrival, complete with a hasty hanging following an admittedly unlawful execution for cheating at cards. I like that Louise was back again, insightfully and scathingly interviewing Campbell. He may be able to accomplish an amazing feat – to put Cullen and Durant back on the same side of something. Ezra causing trouble in Cullen’s absence was interesting, and I like how Ruth is standing up for him and watching out for his wellbeing.
