What I’m Watching: Masters of Sex

Masters of Sex: Season 2, Episode 4 “Dirty Jobs” (C+)

Things are regressing in a disconcerting way on this show, and it’s becoming increasingly less enticing to watch. I’m particularly broken up about Libby, who was such a fantastic, fascinating character in season one and has now turned into something wholly different. Trying to curb Coral’s grammar was one thing, but going to the lengths of actually shampooing her hair for her even though Bill told her that she didn’t have lice was downright awful. Her hysterical moment after she got the phone call from Dr. Greathouse’s wife was equally unappealing, and she’s become entirely unrecognizable at this point. Bill, on the other hand, remains as belligerent as ever, practically asking for the condescending attitude Dr. Greathouse expressed towards Virginia’s hiring. He didn’t quite demand the doctors being invited to watch the study with Chinese food in hand, and I suppose that force-feeding a dumpling to one doctor and punching his boss were the best ways to ensure that he went out with a bang. It clearly didn’t take long for him to find new work, but it’s going to be a serious change that I’m sure Libby won’t be happy about. It’s good timing for Virginia considering Dr. DePaul’s perception of her alleged betrayal and her selling of her idea to Rene Auberjonois’ Dr. Papanikolaou, trusting that he could do a better job than Virginia in seeing it to fruition. Austin caused nothing but problems in this hour, and it’s hard to find him sympathetic anymore. Betty’s secret is finally known to Gene, and while he’s broken up about it, it turns out he was keeping a big secret of his own, so I think ultimately the happy couple will make it.
