What I’m Watching: Rectify

Rectify: Season 2, Episode 8 “The Great Destroyer” (B+)

After watching Daniel take some time off from reality, we’re now getting back to the actual facts at hand as the end of this second season approaches. Daniel calling Tawney to pick him up presented another opportunity for complete stream-of-consciousness honesty from Daniel, and Tawney deserves credit for being honest right back about how she really feels about him. We got the rare chance to hear from the quietest member of the Holden-Talbot extended family, who stopped by to ask his big brother Teddy, of all people, why Daniel would admit to a crime he didn’t commit for a lighter punishment. I’m very concerned about the conversation that we didn’t hear between our friendly senator and Ted Sr., especially since he and Janet just got to a really good place. Daniel seemed more normal than ever before as he looked freshly and cleanly dressed, sitting and drinking a beer and raving about cooking steaks. It’s nice to see him doing so well and expressing a positive – and energetic – outlook on life, and it’s great to see Amanda embrace his attitude. What’s less comforting is Daniel’s interest in hearing the recording of his confession, which he apparently requested so that he could act out choking a pillow to see how it feels. Daniel is definitely a good person, but his inability to get a handle on what actually happened and what he may or may not have done suggests that he’s not nearly as innocent as I think we’d all like to think he is.
