What I’m Watching: Stargirl (Season Finale)

Stargirl: Season 1, Episode 13 “Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two” (B+)

This was a decently strong finale, one that allowed our heroes to overcome their foes but with a good deal of personal sacrifice necessary along the way too. Yolanda was surprised to see Henry in the tunnels but quickly saw through his father’s attempted trick, felling the man whose brain had been broadcasting to every adult in the world just moments earlier with one fierce strike of her claws. Recognizing that she shouldn’t have killed him was an important admission that should keep her firmly grounded in pursuing justice in a way that doesn’t involve letting people die for the greater good. That was an even greater gain for Rick, who decided to let the beast who killed his parents go when he saw a vulnerability he didn’t expect just as he was about to end his life. Beth suffered most, with Jordan showing up and destroying the goggles so she no longer had Chuck in her life. It turns out that he wasn’t all that formidable a villain after all, bringing Barbara to try to convince her of his vision for the world before he was ultimately felled by an excitable Mike, whose only interest was proving his worth to be in the JSA. Flashing forward to Christmas to see Courtney and Pat bond as daughter and father before taking in the view atop the center of their town was a rather sentimental ending, one that only briefly teased the additional members of the ISA who will surely return to cause trouble for the good guys. I’d like to also see non-ISA villains, but we’ll see what’s in store for this show, which got off to a good enough start and will likely be able to grow and improve in season two and beyond.

Season grade: B
Season MVP: Neil Jackson as Jordan
