This Is Us: Season 6, Episode 1 “The Challenger” (B+)
This show aired its last episode six months ago, and I was thrilled to be able to see it on a giant drive-in screen with a talkback right after the shocking ending involving Kate’s remarriage. That plot point was largely ignored here, especially since Toby did end up coming home to surprise Kate at the end of her birthday when he was supposed to be away working. She saw a peek into Phillip’s personal life, one that didn’t show him in the best light, but that romance is going to have to develop slowly, or maybe not at all if this show starts spending more time in the future as it nears its end this season. Using the Challenger explosion as a way to explore the power of parenting was very powerful, with Randall being worried about Christa McAuliffe’s kids and Kevin thinking about it only as people on the TV. Rebecca struggling to remember the details of her story was difficult to watch, and I’m glad she’s using her frustration with her deteriorating condition to get Nicky to stop whining and just look for his long lost love. Kevin living in Madison’s garage was a disaster waiting to happen, and it was incredibly awkward to have him hanging around while Elijah was there spending time with Madison. Doing the Manny reboot is an interesting development, one that should continue the process of humbling the playboy actor. Randall wanting to confront the man who broke into his house and then bailing him out was an act of typical overconfidence in the goodness of others, and at least he has a support system in Beth to pick him up after that disappointment.
