What I’m Watching: Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad: Season 5, Episode 14 “Ozymandias” (A-)

It’s astonishing just how quickly and irreversibly things can happen on this show. The way everything was going to play out was dark enough, but now it’s gotten so much worse. The most powerful moment of the episode was when Hank told Walt that he was the smartest person he knew and that he couldn’t even see that Jack had made up his mind ten minutes ago, which was followed up by a quick and final gunshot that meant Hank was dead. Seeing Walt drop to the ground in horror after trying to save his brother-in-law, even offering up the eighty million dollars he had made to save him, was astounding, and it was remarkably similar to the reaction expressed by Skyler when Walt took their baby from her. Marie managed to mess everything up more than imaginable by bragging and forcing Skyler to tell Walter Jr., news he took extremely poorly. There was no turning back once Skyler reached for that knife, which transformed Walt into a completely different person, one blinded by rage and vengeance. He’s lost everything that he worked for, and now he literally has nothing else to do but disappear just like Jesse tried to do. His escape plan really didn’t work very well, and though he was spared execution, he’s in a much worse fate. It’s easy forget that the kind-looking Todd shot a kid almost right after he stepped onto the scene, and it looks like he’s determined to force Jesse to help him if he can’t have his first choice.
