What I’m Watching: Sons of Anarchy (Season Premiere)

Sons of Anarchy: Season 6, Episode 1 “Straw” (B+)

There’s so much to talk about in this premiere, but nothing reverberates quite as much as the extremely disturbing scene at the end of the episode in which the young boy who had been featured in the background throughout walked into his school with a gun. Not showing the actual violence was a noble choice on Kurt Sutter’s part, and I do think that featuring such an event will add an emotional heaviness to this season that has certainly been present up until this point but which will take it to a whole new level. Jax and Nero’s new business partnership actually seems rather tame compared to most of the other developments in this hour, though Kim Dickens’ Colette is definitely the complete opposite of her chef character on “Treme,” and will certainly spell trouble for Jax and SAMCRO. I also think that Peter Weller is especially well-suited to this role, and after seeing him be so great recently on “Dexter” and “Longmire,” he’ll be even more fitting for this part. It was difficult to watch Chibs beat Juice so harshly, but it’s an important step in getting their relationship back to what it was. It’s devastating to find out that Pope’s successor still wants Jax to deliver Tig, and it’s going to take more creativity on his part to figure out how to get out of it this time. Tig’s urine-filled murder was predictably unpleasant to watch, as is any scene going forward featuring Otto. Tara’s situation seems unbearably bleak, and she’s making the most of it by adopting the SAMCRO policy of using violence to improve her situation.
