What I’m Watching: Burn Notice (Series Finale)

Burn Notice: Season 7, Episode 13 “Reckoning”

I feel like I’ve invested a lot of time in this show, and it now ranks as the only USA show I stuck with once they all started airing at other times besides the summer. I didn’t actually watch the first season, tuning in for season two only because Tricia Helfer was joining the cast. I have, however, watched every week since that season two premiere, and I think the show got even better than ever before last year, and this year went in a new direction that really helped to bring Michael full-circle in a way that I was always hoping it would do. This season wasn’t the same as the ones before it, with Michael finally working for the CIA but not in the same positive way he was briefly with Max, instead indebted to the agency and forced to go deep undercover to help bring home a major mission. After last week’s awesome ending, the revelation that Michael shot Sonya before she could shoot Fiona was a great one, particularly because of the rage it triggered in James. After their daring escape from the rooftop, Michael did exhibit some seriously reckless behavior, indicating just how ready he was to be free of James. The best moment of the episode, which started to get me emotional, was when Fiona said “Should we shoot them?” and proceeded to take out all of James’ men. That kind of nostalgia is what a series finale is all about, and Madeleine’s ultimate sacrifice was an excellent way of sending her character out with a purpose. It even made Jesse tear up, which is a difficult thing to do. I like that Sam and Jesse both got pardoned as a result of their help in bringing down James’ network, and the reveal that Michael and Fiona made it out alive was tremendously well-done. Seeing the two of them in such tranquility with Charlie was a fitting if strange end to a truly exciting saga. This has been a wild ride, and I don’t think there will ever be a show quite as undefinable and watchable as this again.
