What I’m Watching: Wilfred (Season Finale)

Wilfred: Season 3, Episode 13 “Regrets” (B+)

It’s no surprise that the unexpected kiss between Ryan and Jenna that ended last week’s episode wouldn’t lead anywhere good, and, as usual, Wilfred managed to make a bad situation infinitely worse by intervening on Ryan’s behalf. Sending Jenna flowers and chocolates meant that what had seemed like a stable and peaceful solution was completely undone, and Jenna’s decision to reduce Ryan’s time with Wilfred was more miserable than he could have imagined. Seeing Wilfred sneak out at night to spend some time with Ryan was a sign of just how dependent he really is, once again reminding that Wilfred is just a dog. A much more jarring reminder of reality was Ryan’s run-in with Ann at his father’s office, which revealed that his father had been recording conversations that Ryan was having with an invisible Wilfred in his house. That seemed like the final straw for their relationship, but an untimely death for Ryan’s eternally unsupportive father unveiled the truth that he actually did care about Ryan, and had set him up with the perfect job at his law firm, which he’ll hopefully take even after discovering the dog statue at the end of the episode. With FX rebranding with a new younger network, it’s hard to know if this show will become part of either channel’s slate next year, and I do hope that there’s more to the future of both of these characters. Though it’s based on the Australian series of the same name, this is still a truly unique and worthwhile series which deserves more time on the air.
