What I’m Watching: Ray Donovan

Ray Donovan: Season 1, Episode 10 “Fite Nite” (B+)

There are few things worse than having a hired hitman decide to kill someone else and then hold a serious grudge against the man who paid for his services in the first place. Clearly Sully didn’t hate Mickey enough to be the one to do the job, since he was kindhearted enough to dig Mickey his own hole so that he wouldn’t have to share it with the truly unlucky Linda for eternity, and that’s exactly how Mickey managed to talk his way out of his fate. The whole episode was foreboding, as first Sully’s man showed up at the gym and piqued Abby’s curiosity, and then Ray heard the news about Sean Walker, only to turn around and see Mickey right behind him. Mickey has gone from a man caught between the FBI and an assassin to someone on top, free from his bullseye and infinitely more dangerous now that he knows that Ray was the one who came after him. Ray’s fury at his father’s continued ability to live is contrasted magnificently by the joy expressed by Darryl when Mickey finally did show up to his fight. Mickey lashing out at Bunchy, however, may have very negative consequences, especially considering the fact that Bunchy did find the priest from his childhood and no one seems to want to hear it. I’m sure Ray will step up and take care of it once he realizes, but he’s got much more to worry about with a suspicious wife and an enraged assassin on the loose.
