What I’m Watching: Dexter

Dexter: Season 8, Episode 10 “Goodbye Miami” (B+)

I now see the relevance of the final scene from last week’s episode, which showed Daniel and Dr. Vogel playing house. It was the idea of tranquility and family that both Dr. Vogel and Dexter are searching for, but that neither can possibly achieve. After failing to protect Hannah because he was so intent on finding and killing Daniel, things got all the more devastating for Dexter when, upon realizing that his mother was never going to love him again, Daniel decided to put her right in front of the window and kill her while Dexter watched, helpless to do anything about it. I’m glad that Hannah burst out of the apartment and ran straight to the emergency room to get Harrison looked at following his treadmill fall when she couldn’t reach Dexter, but it’s all but guaranteed that Clayton is going to catch her now, and Dexter might be in serious trouble now too. Dexter telling Batista that he was leaving was a big deal, but with a whole two hours left before this show signs off the air, it was way too early for that to pan out without any problems arising. Quinn breaking up with Jamie because he didn’t think it was working was only half-legitimate, since the reason it wasn’t working was that he never felt the same way for Jamie that he did for Deb, regardless of whether he was still hung up on her. That said, it didn’t take long for Quinn and Deb to reignite their feelings, but it’s probably for the best given what’s coming next for Deb. She turned out not to just like him for his money, but Masuka isn’t immune to normal growing pains like having your daughter show up high to a crime scene on a Saturday.
