What I’m Watching: Hell on Wheels

Hell on Wheels: Season 3, Episode 6 “One Less Mule” (B+)

In one sense, nothing much happened in this episode. On the other hand, three very important developments did play themselves out, and they’ll all have crucial consequences for all of our characters going forward. The Swede broke free of his seemingly blissful Mormon life by drowning both of the parents while he was being baptized, which sets him up for a lonely future that seems certain to be filled with violence. Durant bringing General Grant in to try to unseat Cullen was a bold and smart ploy, but, wonderfully, it backfired, revealed in a superb scene that found the future President and Cullen drinking and smoking together on horseback. Grant renaming Durant’s town was great, and I loved Cullen’s reaction. The fact that Cullen shot his would-be murderer in the head while effectively being tried for murder by the board was intriguing, but the man sure does now how to keep his operation running. Cullen kissing the reporter who inadvertently brought the fury of the board upon him while he was drunk was another interesting happening, but it is important that Cullen has some outlet for all of the rage he feels on a regular basis. It’s good to see Elam making smart choices, both in terms of how he handles his job as sheriff and his future with Eva. I suspect that the McGinnis brothers won’t be separated permanently, but Cullen did seem pretty intent on letting the treacherous Sean go, and the casual nature of his dismissal shouldn’t be mistaken for indifference.
