What I’m Watching: Wilfred

Wilfred: Season 3, Episode 12 “Heroism” (B+)

I’ve written this before, but it’s good to see Wilfred reminded that, after all, he’s just a dog, and sometimes has impulses that are inextricably related to that. The desire to be a hero dog was a perfect example, and it’s no surprise that Wilfred would do something like start a fire to try to be the one to save Jenna and ultimately not even manage to make it out of the house without Ryan’s help. What that led to, of course, was this show’s devastatingly serious side, which was extremely effective in this half-hour as related to Jenna and her mental wellbeing. Wilfred pointing out that she wasn’t even able to do basic things without being scared was unexpectedly spot-on, and Ryan’s realization that he was doing the wrong thing by giving Jenna space since it wasn’t helping her at all was equally logical. Jenna planting a long, passionate kiss on Ryan before walking out as he stared in silence was considerably less predictable, and that’s a major thing since Ryan’s crush on Jenna has been a decidedly one-sided attraction since day one, and to see it returned is a huge development. Drew doesn’t seem like the type to go ballistic on the guy his girlfriend kissed since he doesn’t have such a mean streak in him, but I do think that Jenna won’t want to continue exploring her feelings for Ryan and instead will run straight into Drew’s arms. Either way, next week marks the season finale, and this show has yet to be renewed for a fourth season, so hopefully we’ll be left off on a positive if certainly thought-provoking note.
