What I’m Watching: Doom Patrol

Doom Patrol: Season 3, Episode 9 “Evil Patrol” (B+)

For a show that has always featured some pretty wild, over-the-top content that somehow manages to seem normal and believable, it outdid itself in this episode with Madame Rouge shapeshifting into Clara’s baby and doing acrobatics all over the room to take out each member of the Doom Patrol. It wasn’t a great hour for communication and people seeing eye-to-eye, with both the Doom Patrol and the Brotherhood of Evil expressing serious discord about their missions and their desires. Madame Rouge was not welcomed warmly back by the Brain and by Monsieur Mallah, who just wanted to enjoy retirement and not worry about decades-old squabbles with dead men. The Brain was all about using the Robotman body to dance and have the time of his life, and it doesn’t look like Rita’s vengeful search for Madame Rouge is going to go too well since she may not be long for this world. Vic’s new face wasn’t received very warmly by any of his friends, and things got pretty vicious on the bus when even Larry, who is usually the most agreeable of the bunch, started lashing out at Rita for not being honest about why she was really trying to rescue Cliff. Before she retreated back into the crumbling underground, it was interesting to see Kay express interest in being interviewed by Niles the way that all of the other personalities did, choosing Vic as the closest possible substitute. I honestly have no idea what comes next in the season finale, but that unpredictability is part of why I love this show.
