B Positive: Season 2, Episode 3 “Bagels, Billiards and a Magic Show” (B-)
What is going on here? This show has completely changed its focus now that kidney transplant has successfully happened, and it’s going in an entirely new direction, complete with an equally strange and eye-popping new opening credits. I suppose there wouldn’t have been a real way for it to continue like it had been previously, and there is something to be said for a pivoted spotlight on a different kind of care that isn’t always showcased. That said, I’m not sure how I feel about the personalities given to the two characters played by Jane Seymour and Jim Beaver, two talented actors who I think are far more capable than the exaggerated roles they’ve been given here. I can appreciate the casting of Hector Elizondo, an actor who has been on so many shows over the course of his career and was falsely reported to have died earlier this year, as Harry, who seems to be a bit too eager to throw things at people but is also now okay with the idea of talking to Drew. Bringing Gideon and Drew over to work in different capacities at the retirement home is at least clever since it gives everyone a new function. I just don’t want to see this devolve into a show that isn’t as creative and entertaining. I do like the intense awkwardness that Drew has now developed, trying to talk to his Roomba and shaking his head at his own awful jokes after he made them on the phone to Gina.
