What I’m Watching: Only Murders in the Building (Season Finale)

Only Murders in the Building: Season 1, Episode 10 “Open and Shut” (B+)

There’s always a point in film and television where someone is revealed to be duplicitous and then abruptly changes all of their behavior. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case here at all, as Jan tried to keep the deception up, wondering aloud whether the murderer was targeting bassoonists. But she was way ahead of Charles and his stage drinking, poisoning his handkerchief and leaving him there to die. It was entertaining and maddening to watch him slowly make his way into an elevator full of people who hated him and didn’t notice that he desperately needed help, and Oliver and Mabel finally rescued him in the stroller. The confrontation with Jan was appropriately dramatic, though Charles’ big speech wasn’t nearly as coherent as he believed it to be since he was still under the effects of the poison. Having Tim narrate the episode was fitting, though we still didn’t get to know him all that well. Oliver’s son coming and reconciling with him was a nice moment, as was Charles finally deciding to text Lucy. Charles finishing the podcast season with the proclamation of “We are all Tim Kono” was emphatic and perfectly pronounced. The fire trucks and Mabel standing over a dead body made clear that this isn’t the end of the podcast, though it will be hard for the three newly-arrested hosts to put it on from behind bars. Cinda’s assistant had the best line of the episode: “Coming this fall, only murderers in the building.” I’m very much in.

Season grade: A-
Season MVP: Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez
