What I’m Watching: What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows: Season 3, Episode 9 “A Farewell” (B+)

Here’s a dramatic twist I didn’t see coming, and one that I’d be surprised to learn is truly permanent given this show’s knack for reincarnating its characters and not letting them die. It was a clever distraction to have this be ostensibly about Nandor and how discontent he was with his life, determined to prepare for a lengthy slumber only to be awakened multiple times within a matter of hours. Having other vampires check his body to measure the size of his equipment was incredibly awkward, but he played along fine so that he could be left alone. I recognized David Cross, an entertaining comedian I got to interview earlier this year, as Dominykas the Dreadful, and Donal Logue from “The Knights of Prosperity” was playing himself. Khandi Alexander from “CSI: Miami” was Contessa Carmilla de Mornay, another fun addition. It’s possible these three have appeared on the show before, but at this point I’m just not sure. But to the misery at hand, it was sweet to learn that, as soon as he discovered that Colin Robinson was going to die on his one hundredth birthday, Laszlo set out to give him a series of good times so that he could go out peacefully. Less pleasant was Nandor not believing it to be true and touching his face, resulting in a rather vicious puncture. Colin is a weird character, to be sure, but can this show truly go on without him? I have to imagine this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him.
