What I’m Watching: Nikita

Nikita: Season 1, Episode 5 “The Guardian” (C)

Are we really expected to believe that Percy and Michael just run around shouting about their communication problems in front of all the unsuspecting trainees? It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to think that Nikita Syndrome would affect at least a couple of those recruits every day, as they’re privy to far too much top-secret information about their evil wheelings and dealings not to put two and two together. That is of course the trouble with this show, which, not unlike other CW and former WB shows, struggles considerably in the dialogue department, frequently eliciting laughs and groans rather than serious emotional responses. Alex popping in an earpiece and slipping a phone into Birkhoff’s pocket are moves done way too out in the open, and it didn’t take Thom long to discover that something was afoot. Starting a romantic relationship with Thom is a terrible idea for Alex since Jaden is already suspicious of her and determined to take her down. Percy did come much closer to Nikita than he has in the past, and it’s really only because Nikita got jealous that Percy came to Montreal himself rather than sending Michael in his stead. Don’t trained spies know that you’re never supposed to stand near a window? Owen’s beloved girlfriend might still be alive if Owen and Nikita had blocked their scuffle better. I think this show is desperately in need of a major event, preferably one involving either Thom or Michael making a big revelation followed by a big choice regarding their allegiance to an unforgettable woman in their lives.
