Parenthood: Season 4, Episode 10 “Trouble in Candyland” (B+)
This was a miserable episode in terms of things falling apart, with one major victory and one small one, and plenty of trouble along the way. Crosby’s unfortunate interference in Adam’s conversation with Marleise, in which she revealed herself to be a breast cancer survivor, nearly sabotaged their negotiations, but they managed to pull together and enlist the help of all their neighbors for a handy defeat of Marleise’s attempt to shut them down for good. It was fun to see Glen Hansard from “Once” playing himself, and to add a bit of musical charm to this show. I also liked Adam’s staunch denial that he had ever urinated in an alley, which reminded me of another Peter Krause character, Nate Fisher from “Six Feet Under,” who was photographed by Billy doing just such a thing on that show. Julia had moderate success with Kristina’s candy motivation system convincing Victor that he wasn’t stupid, and hopefully that will help to ease his discontent for a while. Ryan working on Joel’s construction job turned out extremely poorly, and I’m very worried about Amber’s mental state if she finds out about his apparent suicide attempt. It was inevitable, but Mark telling Sarah that he couldn’t do it anymore after seeing her drunk with Hank and then finding out that she knew that job was a sham was heartbreaking, and I can’t imagine she’s headed anywhere good from here. Maybe she and Hank can comfort each other for a bit, but that’s not going to be a permanent solution, especially not for Drew.
