What I’m Watching: Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation: Season 5, Episode 8 “Pawnee Commons” (B+)

I love that the Pawnee-Eagleton rivalry is something that we’ve only seen a few times on this show, yet it’s already a staple of its invented culture and absolutely hilarious to watch. Leslie’s misgivings about working with an architect from Eagleton were well-founded but misplaced, since, against all odds, Reston St. James was actually a respectful Eagletonian with positive ideas about how to create a beautiful park in Pawnee. The design brought to Leslie and Ben by his two later axed associates was pretty awful, and it’s great to see how riled up such things get the happy couple. Ben’s reaction to the waiter’s story about palm trees was particularly fantastic. I’m enjoying the amount of time devoted to Tom’s Rent-A-Swag business, and I think it’s great that he recaps what the idea is every time he brings up the business. Ron having Chris build a staircase leading nowhere to keep him occupied was terrific, especially since Tom ended up using it as a shoe rack. Their romance may not have been in the cards, but Ann has turned into the best friend that Tom could ask for, constantly setting him straight and telling him what he needs to do to win the support of his friends. Andy and April’s latest foreplay was disturbing at best, but I liked hat it worked out as a fitting funeral for Burt Macklin and a nice revelation that Andy might be good at his actual job. Maybe he’ll make it as a cop after all.
