Parks and Recreation: Season 5, Episode 9 “Ron and Diane” (B+)
The notion that Leslie has had a Ron Swanson Google alert for the past seven years is just fantastic. It was great to see Ron in his element, giddy over the sight of a famed carpenter and excited about the wonders of excellent woodwork. The appearance of one of the Tammys was inevitable, and I like that Leslie was entirely up for the task of distracting her for the evening, keeping her away from Ron while he did his best to hang on to Diane. It was sweet to hear Ron defend his friendship with Leslie to Diane, and I’m glad that Diane isn’t going to make Ron choose between her and Leslie. The concept of the Jerry Dinner is hilarious, and I always enjoy seeing how Donna and Tom spend their time outside of work together. Ann positioning herself as Jerry’s defender was fun, mainly because Tom didn’t realize that they had all actually been invited but hadn’t realized it because of the spam filter Tom set up to weed out all of Jerry’s nice e-mails. Ben trying to hang out with Chris again was fun, and I liked Chris’ reaction to accidentally drinking the regular eggnog. The beauty of Jerry’s wife is one of those wonderfully puzzling elements of this show, something that even Chris can’t comprehend. My two favorite revelations of the episode were Ann’s discovery that April is really weak and might have an iron deficiency, and that Leslie knows that Ron secretly likes artichokes and plums.
