What I’m Watching: Sons of Anarchy (Season Finale)

Sons of Anarchy: Season 5, Episode 13 “J’ai Obtenu Cette” (B+)

This finale to the show’s most violent season yet was guaranteed to be brutal, and it certainly delivered. I’m not sure I can ever unsee Otto biting and spitting out his tongue, which nearly made me vomit, something that has never even come close to happening on this show. Letting Dante get attacked by a vicious dog within the confines of a car was rather disturbing as well, but at least it didn’t involve bodily dismemberment. It looked like Jax really was going to hand over Tig, and storming in there to execute all of Pope’s people before letting Tig be the one to pull the trigger and end Pope’s life was intense. Doing it all with Clay’s gun was brilliant, and it’s interesting to see Roosevelt turn into a new version of Hale for Jax, someone well aware that gross misdeeds are going on but powerless to do anything if he wants to help exact some form of justice. What’s unfortunate about Jax’s smart move, however, is that he’s now realizing that, no matter how much he tried to deny it, he may not be so different from Clay. He’s lost Bobby’s support completely, and he’s sure to fall apart with Tara being carted away to jail. Gemma turning on Tara was horrifying, and Jax is going to have to deal with another traitorous family member if ever she tells him. I suspect she’ll hold up better than Wendy, who went squealing to Tara right away about Jax’s terrible treatment of her. It was great to see Nero tell Jax that he would only get out if Jax did too, and he’s been a fantastic addition this season. Things are seriously messy with the club, and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together in season six.

Season grade: A-
Season MVP: Jimmy Smits as Nero
