What I’m Watching: Parenthood

Parenthood: Season 4, Episode 9 “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” (B+)

This show is turning extremely serious, featuring some heavy, dramatic plotlines that don’t spell ultimate happiness for its characters. Kristina forcefully encouraging Max to go to the dance that he didn’t even want to have in the first place resulted in a somber and heartbreaking scene at the end of the episode which underlines Kristina’s precarious state, and Adam was too busy focusing on his family to even know anything about what’s happening with the Luncheonette. Pamela Adlon’s arrival was typically fierce and entertaining, but the notion of the business failing is hardly a laughing matter. Sarah prioritizing Hank over Mark is bad news, and he rightfully expressed his opinion to her considering he never sticks up for himself despite her often inconsiderate behavior. Everyone’s going to be very upset that Mark made it into the family picture if things don’t work out. It wasn’t pleasant to see the usually happy Julia and Joel fight about him going back to work, and I’m glad that’s one thing that could be swiftly resolved. Ryan, on the other hand, seems to be continuing in a downward spiral, and I’m not sure that either Zeek or Amber is going to be able to help him get out of it. Amber hasn’t had too much luck with guys in the past, and she’s going to be heartbroken if anything happens to Ryan, or, worse, if he harms himself. Let’s hope that stern patriarch Zeek can give him a firm push in the right direction.
