What I’m Watching: Justified

Justified: Season 5, Episode 8 “Whistle Past the Graveyard” (B+)

This show doesn’t let up, continuing a strong season in an episode that both drives the plot forward and takes a minor tangent that brings together two of its most charismatic characters unlikeliest to get along. The fact that Wendy called Raylan as soon as Jack took Kendal was incredible, especially considering that he was with Allison and about to take her on a romantic but weird getaway to Florida. Not delivering any damning information on her brothers was a sly trick on Wendy’s part, though I suspect this isn’t the last time she and Raylan will interact. As always, this show manages to do some truly exceptional casting for the briefest of roles, as exemplified by the initially questionable but ultimately quite successful choice of Kyle Bornheimer to play Jack and the obvious selection of William Forsythe as the one hunting him. Kudos to Jacob Lofland for doing a spectacular job of playing Kendal, following up on the potential he showed in “Mud” (see it if you haven’t) with this great part. It’s a shame that this act of semi-selflessness cost Raylan his relationship with Allison, and she’ll be sorely missed. Ava’s doing pretty well for herself in prison, and as long as Boyd makes it back unscathed from his current adventures with the Crowe family, she’ll be in good shape for a while. It’s a good thing that Boyd and Daryl devised a good plan to keep their take, and maybe now Mr. Crowder can distance himself from this loose cannon clan.
