What I’m Watching: Married

Married: Season 2, Episode 8 “Mother’s Day” (B-)

Ah, the show I wish this was (and it used to be). It tries hard and has an idea of the kind of storylines it wants to feature, yet somehow they just don’t hit home the way that they should. It’s been explained and shown that Ella hates her mother and Lina just doesn’t know what to do about it. In this case, not wanting to go out for Mother’s Day was exactly the wrong time to lash out, and the time it took to play out and resolve itself felt far too long. I wasn’t a fan at all of A.J. tacking himself on to their family and then having fun talking about how he and Russ are both bottoms. A.J. is a character who I feel can be strong or at least tolerable if he’s utilized to just the right degree, but this was too much. Conversely, every time Jess appears on screen, she brightens the show, and it saddens me that she actually took up a good deal of the storyline in this episode but didn’t show up at all, a trend that I worry very much will only continue given her new recurring status. I do like seeing Shep though, and I’m glad that he was featured. I also enjoyed the casting of Sarah Baker, who played the title character in the Emmy-winning “So Did the Fat Lady” episode of “Louie” last year, as the employee who wasn’t too fond of Jess and the fact that she and her friends snorted cocaine in the bathroom of a children’s establishment.
