What I’m Watching: The Affair

The Affair: Season 3, Episode 2 (B-)

I’m a huge fan of this show, but there was something about this episode that just wasn’t anywhere near as interesting or involving as it’s been in the past. Having multiple perspectives is this show’s signature, and now it’s moved away from conflicting narratives that show events as seen differently by each of the players. Now, it’s one much larger story that requires many gaps to be filled in, with Noah involved somewhat in Helen’s life and not at all present in Allison’s, which is chaotic enough without the volatile writer. I’m not sure what the need to fast-forward through Noah’s time in jail and past all these events we don’t know much about is, though I guess the first two seasons were built so much on flashbacks that it’s standard at this point. Whitney’s boyfriend was something, and while Vic was ready to entertain the absurdity of everything about him, Helen wasn’t even close to amused. It was weird to hear her make such current references as someone watching “Shameless,” which airs right before this show, and to someone voting for Trump. Her relationship with Vic doesn’t seem like it’s all that great, and Noah doesn’t want her at all either. Allison giving up her baby to Cole because she couldn’t handle herself when her second child turned four was an unfortunate development, and it’s good to see that Cole has come around to the idea of letting her spend time with her daughter. I’m hopeful that episode three will be a bit more focused and enticing.
