Insecure: Season 1, Episode 8 “Broken as F**k” (B+)
This show has been a great find this season, and I’m glad that it’s going to be back for a second round. It felt strange to see Issa so isolated in this episode, longing for Lawrence and trying desperately – and flailing – to reconcile with Molly. Showing up to Lawrence’s office and interrupting a meeting was hardly a step in the right direction. Going away with Molly and other friends was poorly-timed, and Molly had a great night after meeting a guy at the club. It was only when Issa stepped up to defend Molly in the hot tub that things started to turn around, and that their friendship was headed on the right track again. Driving Issa back when Lawrence called and her Uber was going to take forty-five minutes to get there helped to close the gap, and Molly acting out Lawrence’s possible reactions while driving was fun. What she couldn’t have anticipated, and which was a surprise given what we’ve seen of him, was that Lawrence would invite her to come home with the pretext of possibly getting back together when he was actually having sex with someone else to hurt her. That showed his true colors and that they shouldn’t be together given the numerous different and equally unforgiving ways he could have reacted, and that left the season to end on a poignant note of friendship as Molly comforted Issa. They’re both at different points in their lives, but they care about each other more than anything, which is the real heart of this show.
Season grade: B+
