Golden Globe Musings: Best Actress in a TV Series – Comedy/Musical

Golden Globe nominations for this year will be announced soon, so here’s a survey of the contenders and the most likely predictions at this time. Weigh in with your thoughts, and let me know if I’ve left off anyone important. A reminder that last year’s nominees mean zilch at the Globes and that the race is almost entirely unpredictable.

Last year’s nominees:
Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend)
Jamie Lee Curtis (Scream Queens)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep)
Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin)
Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie)

Potential first-time nominees:
Aya Cash (You’re the Worst)
Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)
Laurie Metcalf (Getting On)
Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish)
Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer)

New contenders:
Pamela Adlon (Better Things)
Kristen Bell (The Good Place)
Minnie Driver (Speechless)
Tig Notaro (One Mississippi)
Sarah Jessica Parker (Divorce)
Issa Rae (Insecure)
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag)

Past nominees:
Lena Dunham (Girls)

I’d love to think that last year’s very deserving winner, Bloom, is a lock to repeat, but Globe voters historically have very short memories when it comes to breakout new shows in their sophomore year, especially comedies. That may mean saying goodbye to Rodriguez, who continues to be excellent, and almost certainly to Curtis too, which doesn’t bother me at all. After her Emmy nomination, I’d give Ellis Ross the edge over Schumer, Kemper, and Metcalf, but I think this could be all about new faces. I like Rae and think that Parker is likely, but I’m really pulling for the fantastic Waller-Bridge.

Current predictions:
Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep)
Sarah Jessica Parker (Divorce)
Issa Rae (Insecure)
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag)
